Job Description
Assistant Professor - Cell Biology
The Department of Biology at the University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of cell biology, beginning in the academic year 2023. We invite applications from candidates who work within any sub-area of cell biology, including (but not limited to) cell organization, differentiation, motility, signaling, and degeneration. Example study systems include stem cells, quiescence and cell cycle reentry, neural or glial biology, or any fundamental and open questions in cell and developmental biology. We welcome applications from candidates using a variety of approaches and techniques, including single-molecule, live, and/or super-resolution imaging, signal transduction biosensing, high-throughput screening, and experiment-coupled quantitative modeling. Candidates must hold a PhD and have postdoctoral training (or the equivalent). Successful candidates will have an established record of research in high-quality journals and show strong promise of an externally-funded program of research. The faculty member holding this position is also expected to contribute to the instructional mission of the Department of Biology by teaching courses and mentoring students, as well as by fostering a climate of inclusiveness.

The Department of Biology comprises two recently renovated buildings that are connected by a skywalk, located in the heart of Iowa City. The department is home to the Carver Center for Genomics, offering in-house DNA sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, and other services, and the Carver Center for Imaging, which houses a multiphoton microscope as well as other confocal and epifluorescence systems. Faculty in the Department of Biology work on a wide range of cell systems and model organisms, including C. elegans, Drosophila, molluscs, zebrafish, Xenopus, mice, yeast, maize, Ceratopteris, and cancer cell lines. The Department of Biology has both PhD and MS programs, and faculty also recruit PhD students from two NIH T32 training programs: the Interdisciplinary Program in Genetics (directed by a Biology Department faculty member) and the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience. There are extensive opportunities for collaboration with researchers across many other departments on campus, including in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (e.g., Psychological and Brain Sciences, Mathematics, Health and Human Physiology) and in the Carver College of Medicine (e.g., Anatomy and Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, Neuroscience and Pharmacology). There are also state-of-the-art facilities at the University of Iowa, including MRI, microscopy, and high-throughput genetic analysis facilities.

To apply, please visit the submission website at https://jobs.uiowa.edu/content/faculty/ and refer to requisition #74529. Materials should be submitted electronically, including a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, research statement, teaching statement, and a statement detailing a demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as copies of selected scholarly papers (up to three, combined into a single document for submission) and email contact information for three letters of recommendation. Note that references will be automatically contacted through the Jobs@UIowa application system and prompted to submit a letter of reference/recommendation electronically. Informal inquiries about the position can be directed to jodie-plumert@uiowa.edu (Chair of Biology). The review of applicants will begin on October 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled.
