3 Reasons You Need to Get Healthcare as Soon as Possible After You Turn 26

3 Reasons You Need to Get Healthcare as Soon as Possible After You Turn 26
Posted By: Kara Masterson on October 06, 2022

For many college students, the thought of getting healthcare is not at the top of their list of priorities. After all, you're young and healthy, what do you need insurance for? However, there are several reasons why every college student should have healthcare, even if they are young and healthy. Here are three of those reasons.

Preventative Care is Important

One of the most important reasons to have a healthcare plan, something like medicare advantage, is for preventative care. Just because you feel fine now doesn't mean you will feel fine forever. Getting regular check-ups and screenings can help catch potential health problems early before they become serious (and expensive) problems. Additionally, many health insurance plans offer free or low-cost preventive care services, so there's really no excuse not to take advantage of them. Regular doctor visits may seem like a pain, but they could save you a lot of trouble down the road.

Accidents Happen

Another reason to get healthcare is that accidents happen, and they happen to everyone regardless of age or health status.

A slip in the shower, a basketball injury, or a car accident can happen at any time, and it's important to be prepared for the medical costs required to treat them. If you don't have health insurance and an accident does happen, you could be looking at tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills; bills that will likely stay with you for years to come if you have trouble paying for them out of pocket. No one wants to think about worst-case scenarios, but it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Peace of Mind

Finally, having healthcare gives you peace of mind. Knowing that you're covered in case something happens can help reduce stress and anxiety. Worrying about how you would pay for an unexpected health problem is the last thing you need when dealing with schoolwork, exams, and everything else that comes with being a college student. So do yourself a favor and get insured as you'll be glad you did if (or when) something unexpected happens.

There's no question that Healthcare can be expensive, but there are many reasons why it's worth the investment, especially for college students already no longer eligible for their parent’s health insurance. From preventive care to peace of mind, having health insurance is an essential part of taking care of yourself both now and in the future.
