About the Author:

I was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi 1972. One of my earliest memories are of me riding on a cotton sack pulled by my grandmother in a field. I remember the heat; it was so thick and heavy. I remember the scratches I got from the plants, it was like they were angry with the pickers. I remember trying to overcome my fears of getting bitten by one of the mouse hunting snakes I saw on the ground.

Through that unmistakable recollection, I can’t help but feel I share that one true experience with Cathay. I also feel the cotton fields of the South are still stained with the blood and sweat of generations of American souls. As time and opportunity would have it, I left the farm and moved to Ohio. I briefly attended university before joining the military during the first Gulf War. I discovered the existence of Cathay while researching the Civil War in during my first tour in Afghanistan. From the farming fields to the battlefields, I found an unquenched thirst to learn more about African American participation in the conflict and the unsung historical figure who is Cathay Williams.
