3 Things That Are Required When Buying a Car as a Student
Posted By: Kara Masterson on August 19, 2022

Having a car available to you likely makes life as a student much easier. It’s much easier to get to campus when you have your own car, meaning you don’t have to rely on the bus or walking all the way to class. No matter who you are though, buying a new car can be exciting as you look forward to getting the keys to a new set of wheels and enjoying your time spent on the road. You may already know exactly the make and model you want to purchase or you may be trying out the different options as you schedule test drives with your local dealerships. As you prepare to buy a car, there are a few things that you need to be prepared to present to the dealer to ensure you can successfully complete the transaction.

A Driver's License

The dealership will request to see your driver's license to ensure you're qualified to drive and are a licensed driver. You'll first need to present this when you want to take one of the cars for a test drive. The dealership will likely make a copy for their records before giving you the keys to the vehicle. You'll also need to have your license available if you plan to apply for an auto loan once you find the right car to purchase.

Proof of Insurance

Most states in the U.S. require obtaining an auto insurance policy for the vehicle that you own to ensure you can legally drive it. This can delay the process of buying a new car if you haven't obtained a policy yet, making it necessary to perform the step in advance.

Prepare to remove an older vehicle you've owned, perhaps the car your parents taught you to drive or shared with others before buying this one, and replace it with the new car on your car insurance policy. Especially if you don’t plan on having access to other cars once you have your own. When you plan to head to the dealership to make your purchase, bring the insurance card with you to complete the transaction and avoid delays.

When looking into insurance, you might also see what deals may be offered to students who are good drivers. Some insurance companies reward students who have good grades and a good driving record.

Form of Payment

Although there are many different ways to buy a car, you still need to have a valid form of payment ready to hand over to the dealer. If you plan to apply for an auto loan through the dealership, you'll need to prepare to complete the necessary paperwork. This will also require paying with a check or your credit card to cover the down payment. You may also need to present a current utility bill to provide proof of your residence when applying for an auto loan.

Buying a car can be a lengthy and complicated process if you don't have the right documents on hand. Preparing in advance for the transaction can allow you to avoid issues or delays and look forward to driving off in your new car. That’s why it’s important to make sure you have your driver’s license, proof of insurance, and the method of payment secured before you go forward with the purchase.
